How to make your kitchen green

Many people today are concerned about the environment and are often on the look-out for ways they can do something to help. The kitchen is a great place to start being more environmentally friendly and is somewhere that people often overlook in their efforts to be more green.

First up, the use of disposable napkins and paper towels are a big contributor to waste in the kitchen. When you wash your hands you probably reach for a disposable paper towel which you will then throw away. People would do well to switch over to reusable items, having hand towels in the kitchen will reduce the need for paper greatly, if you wash these regularly this will ensure you have clean and dry hands.

The same is true of the dinner table, where many people choose to use paper napkins. A worthwhile investment would be a set of nice cloth napkins that are washable and reusable. These not only are better for the environment but can look nicer when you are sitting down with family or friends for a nice dinner. Don’t get rid of paper towels altogether though – there are some messes that you just don’t want to have to use cloth towels for.

Another great waste in the kitchen is with plastic. Many people choose to take lunch to work wrapped in cling film, this is then put in a plastic bag and after the meal has been eaten both of these items will be thrown away. Switching over to using reusable plastic lunch boxes is a great way to save money and the environment, the only hassle is a little extra washing up. These containers will also have a better seal than wrappings and will ensure your food remains fresh.

As for foods, it is a good idea to buy fair trade products. These ensure that farmers are getting a fair price for the products they sell. A popular choice for fair trade is coffee but there are many other foods that are also part of the agreement so when buying foods look out for the fair trade label.

Something that involves very little investment but can reap great rewards is growing a herb garden. You don’t even need to have a garden to do this as they can be grown indoors. You can start a garden with just a few pots and some compost, then choose a few of your favourite herbs and plant them up. Put the garden on the windowsill to ensure that the plants get all the light they need to grow and by doing this you will ensure you always have a good supply of organic herbs to add to your meals.

A reusable mug will have many benefits. Instead of buying your morning coffee on the way to work, make it at home and take it with you on your journey. Not taking the disposable cup from the coffee shop will save the environment as well as saving you money. Get an insulated mug to keep your drink warm.
