Green homes now open for viewing

A collection of environmentally-friendly homes are now officially open to viewing by the public with councillors being among the first to visit the site. Some of the green-option fittings installed in the new homes, located in Upper Cambourne, include a smart metering system, sustainable flooring, recycling facilities, solar panels, low energy appliances, and a heat recovery ventilation system.

The four house display and a sales information centre on the same opened last weekend; the show began with South Cambridgeshire district’s councillor’s being taken on an exclusive tour of the Taylor Wimpey site.

Councillor Ray Manning, the head of the district council, said that considering the prediction that there would be an increase in global fuel prices, it would be nice to see such developments presenting home owners with an array of option so that the latter could go green thereby reducing their bills from the get go.

He added that such innovative features would also ensure that people’s homes were not only warmer but also more comfortable to stay in. Sustainable energy options were mandatory as far as the planning permission given by the council for the construction of the 950 homes was concerned. These homes are being constructed in Upper Cambourne with the site also containing murals and signs depicting how home owners can save huge amounts as far as energy bills were concerned.

The gardens around the homes are a true depiction of green living with some of the homes having options like rainwater harvesting, bat, bird or insect boxes, and raised vegetable patches. Stacy Dorman, an executive at Taylor Wimpey said that as considerate and a responsible construction company, they were committed in their endeavour of improving the sustainability of the environment through the homes they were building.

Dorman added that they were delighted to have had the opportunity to provide a fantastic array of eco-friendly options to buyers in their Cambourne development project which has given their clients the chance to have a greener lifestyle and at the same time enjoy significant savings on their energy and utility bills.
